abstract

one of the most concerning issues for researchers is to predict the shape and dimensions of the scour pit nearhydraulic structures such as the base of bridges, weirs, valves and stilling basins due to both financial and humanhazards induced by destruction of the structure. as the scour issue has its own complexity in relation to themultiplicity of effecting factors on it, in this study therefore, the results of laboratory analysis of local scour due tosubmerged horizontal jets were compared with numerical simulation results from flow-3d three-dimensional modelto test the potency of the numerical model. as a result, the model is proposed in place of the experimental modelwhich has its own drawbacks and high costs. in this study, we measure maximum scour depth in relative equilibriumin 2 states and 6 test modes with different valve openings and tail water depth per different discharges. comparisonof the results indicates about 11% error for flow-3d numerical model in relation to the experimental model which byconsidering the complexity of scour and deposition phenomena, is considered a good result.

Prediction of Scour Profile Caused by Submerged Three-Dimensional Wall Jets

Series of laboratory tests were carried out to study the extent of scour caused by a three-dimensional wall jets exiting from a square cross-section nozzle and into a non-cohesive sand beds. Previous observations have indicated that the effect of the tail water depth was significant for densimetric Froude number greater than ten. However, the present results indicate that the cut off value coul...

Numerical Simulation of Skewed Slot Effect on Local Scour Reduction

Local scouring around bridge piers is a natural phenomenon caused by the erosive process of flowing stream on alluvial beds. The 3D flow field around bridge piers interacting with the bed materials increases complexity of local scour process. The local scour depth develops in accelerated flows and if it is not predicted correctly, the bottom level of local scour hole will exceed the original le...

Scour Caused by Three-Dimensional Submerged Square Wall Jet: Sand Deposition in Scour Hole and Ridge

Laboratory tests were carried out to assess the local scour by three-dimensional wall jets from a square crosssection nozzle. To this end, three different tailwater depths were used and the jet expansion ratio was held greater than ten. Velocity measurements were conducted using a one component laser Doppler anemometer. The jet exit Reynolds number was maintained to 1x10 and this value can be c...

Numerical Simulation of Flow Pattern around the Bridge Pier with Submerged Vanes

Bridges are very important for establishing communication paths. For this reason, it is important to control scour around bridge piers. Several methods have been proposed for scour control. One of the most useful methods is the use of submerged vanes. In the other hand, laboratory circumstances force many considered effective factors to be skipped in the scour phenomenon. In this situation, the...
